Trio Reverie: Sedong Hwang, cello; Hannah Kim, violin; Tyler Kim, piano

 

Sedong Hwang is currently, a senior attending University High. His passionate pursuit of perfecting his performance has earned him the title of winner of ASTA LA finals, winner of SYMF young cellist, winner of VOCE competition, winner of the JCM concerto competition, and silver medalist for both the Enkor international competition and PCM competition. He is currently working under the guidance of Professor Joon Sung Jun and has previously worked with Sangwon Cho, Stan Sharp, and Robert deMaine. He has diligently completed three years of Montecito International Music Festival, four years of the Pacific Symphony Youth Ensemble, and six years of Junior Chamber Music where he toured and performed in various cities such as Boston, New York, Vienna, Prague, and Budapest. His Junior Chamber Music group has also been named debut artist for three consecutive seasons. He had the privilege of participating in masterclasses with Lynn Harrel, Robert deMaine, and Daniel Rothmuller and also performed with John Waltz, Dennis Karmazyn, and Susan Botteger. Sedong also served as co-principal of PSYO for three years and participated in the all-state high school orchestra.

 

Hannah Kim, a sixteen-year-old violinist, is a junior at the Sage Hill High School in Newport Coast, CA. She started playing violin when she was five years old and currently studies with Linda Rose. She loves chamber music and has been a JCM member over seven years. She was named debut artist of the year numerous times and won Silver Medal in 2017 PCM Chamber Music Competition. She won many top prizes at solo competitions, too: National YoungArts, Enkor International Music Competition, ASTA, MTAC, SYMF, and Musical Arts Competition of Orange County. Most recently she won 1st Place in Pre College Violin and Grand Prize of 2019 Bowed Strings ASTA LA Concerto Competition to solo with CSULA Orchestra early next year. This past summer, she has attended Curtis SummerFest, where she served as concertmaster in the orchestra. In previous summers, she studied with Jan Sloman at the Meadowmount School of Music. She likes to share her passion in music with the community. She is actively involved in "Back to Bach project" as an associate regional director. Along with other young gifted musicians, she plays and interacts with young children in the area who otherwise would never experience live classical music in their lives. She also plays at benefit concerts for Smile Train, to raise funds to help kids born with clefts.

 

Tyler Kim, a 17-year-old Korean-American pianist, made his concert debut at the age of ten with the Viennese International Orchestra at the Palais Ausburg in Vienna, Austria. Since then, he has performed with various orchestras including the San Diego Symphony, Greater San Diego Symphony, Montgomery Symphony Orchestra, Alicante Philharmonic Orchestra of Spain, MostArts Festival Orchestra, and Inland Valley Symphony. Some of Tyler's major recitals include two performances in Weil Recital Hall at the Carnegie Hall, Walt Disney Concert Hall in Los Angeles, and a duo performance of Scaramouche for two pianos by Darius Milhaud with world renowned concert pianist, Jean-Yves Thibaudet, at the Wallis Annenberg Center for the Performing Arts in Beverly Hills, CA.

 

In addition to orchestra and solo recital appearances, Tyler's most recent competitive accomplishments include being the grand prize winner at the Los Angeles Music Center's Spotlight Competition, semi-finalist at the International Piano-e Competition, finalist at the Bosendorfer and Yamaha USASU International Piano Competition, 1st prize at the Blount-Slawson Young Artists Competition, 1st prize at the Mondavi Center National Young Artists Competition, 1st place in the MTNA California State Competition, and 1st prize winner at the Steinway Junior Piano Competition and prizes at the International Liszt Competition, the Colburn Piano Festival Concerto Competition, and various state and local competitions.


Tyler is a junior at Temecula Valley High School and currently studies with Myong-joo Lee. Tyler studied at the Colburn Music Academy for three years and is now currently enrolled in Chamber Music OC and Junior Chamber Music Orange County.
