JCM Students Shine at 2024 Music in the Mountains Retreat

Over Presidents' Day Weekend 2024, JCM students gathered in Idyllwild for an unforgettable retreat filled with chamber music coachings, master classes, and mountain fun. Highlights included rehearsals at the Idyllwild Arts Academy, fireside gatherings, and a final concert in Lowman Hall.


Students worked closely with JCM Executive Director Dr. Susan Boettger, Dr. Jackie Petitto, and string coach Luke Santonastaso, alongside staff coach Matthew Prichard. Repertoire included trios and quintets by Beethoven, Mendelssohn, Clara Schumann, Piazzolla, and Shostakovich, culminating in a final concert at Lowman Hall.

Additional highlights included:

  • Master classes with Idyllwild Arts faculty Dr. Douglas Ashcraft (piano) and Todor Pelev (violin)

  • A guest concert by jazz bassist and educator Dr. Marshall Hawkins in celebration of Black History Month

  • Group outings to downtown Idyllwild and evening campfires back at Camp Maranatha
