Breanna Thornton

With her adventurous spirit, Breanna contributes to the music community as a violinist, string teacher, and conductor educator. She has taught in four countries and five states gleaning broad perspectives.  As a volunteer, Breanna taught violin/viola and performed administrative duties at Peace Music Academy in Khon Kaen, Thailand. As a participant in the Global Leaders Program, she taught a string workshop in Iquique and Arica, Chile, and several online masterclasses for programs in Chile, Colombia, and Namibia. Most recently, she was a faculty member at Bermuda School of Music (a territory of the UK), where she taught violin and conducted the string orchestra.

Her pedagogy is informed by both traditional and Suzuki methods. Breanna is a certified Suzuki Teacher, having taught in the Suzuki String Program at Bermuda School of Music. During her graduate studies in String Pedagogy, she studied under nationally respected string educator, Robert Gillespie (author of Essential Elements for Strings). He guided and refined her skills to break down complex string techniques and sequence them effectively. Using these skills, she wrote an article, “Strategies for Teaching Spiccato” published in the American String Teacher journal in 2021. Furthermore, Breanna produced a collection of thirty-two sequential arrangements of Latin American Children’s Folk Songs for beginner violin during her doctoral studies. Today, she is an Assistant Professor of Music at California Lutheran University and continues to develop this project.

In her free time, Breanna enjoys hiking, backpacking, camping, and exercising. You will find her at national parks testing her stamina and enjoying the panoramic views.

When she was four years old, Breann started violin at a Suzuki program in Michigan. Today, she holds masters’ degrees in violin performance and string pedagogy from the Ohio State University, where she studied under Robert Gillespie and Kia-Hui Tan. She completed her DMA at the University of Iowa, studying under Katie Wolfe, with a secondary area in conducting.
