Sonora Trio
Bethany Kim has been an active member of Junior Chamber Music (JCM) since 2022 and currently serves on the board of JCMSSA. Under the guidance of Dr. Judy Huang, she has earned first place in numerous competitions, including the Charleston International Competition, Golden Classical Competition, Grand Prize Virtuoso Competitions in both Bonn and Barcelona, Great Composers International Competition, Southwestern Youth Music Festival, Satori Festival, MTAC Festivals, and the Musical Arts Competition of Orange County. She also received second place in the Enkor International Competition and an honorable mention in the Junior Chamber Music Competition.
Bethany’s deep passion for chamber music has led her to perform at the Beethoven House in Germany in commemoration of the composer’s 250th birthday. She has also been invited to perform at Carnegie Hall and the Petit Palau de la Música Catalana in Spain. Now in her fourth year with JCM and her first as a Debut Artist, she has performed at Idyllwild and the Nixon Library as part of the JCM Honors Tour.
Outside of music, Bethany enjoys writing and podcasting. She is the editor-in-chief of Inkblot Magazine, an award-winning publication at the Orange County School of the Arts.
Lydia Kang, 16, is a clarinetist who has studied for the past five years under Boyeun Suh. She has earned top prizes in numerous competitions, including the Southwestern Youth Music Festival, American Protégé Music Competitions, ENKOR Competition, Prima Volta Music Competition, and King’s Peak International Music Competition, among others.
Lydia has been an active member of the OC Branch of JCM since 2022, and is currently serving as a Debut Artist for the 2024–2025 season. Over the past three years, she has performed with ensembles such as the Rabl (BLIV) Quartet, the Menotti Trio (Honors Group), and the Sonora Trio. With these groups, Lydia has garnered awards from the JCM Young Musicians Chamber Competition and Golden Classical Music Awards, and performed internationally in Bonn, Germany after winning the Grand Prize Virtuoso Competition.
As a soloist, Lydia recently made her debut with the South Coast Youth Symphony Orchestra, where she also serves as principal clarinetist. She has been selected to perform with the CASMEC All-State Ensembles for three consecutive years and was recently accepted into the National Youth Orchestra of the USA (NYO-USA), which will tour East Asia in the summer of 2025.
Beyond music, Lydia captains her varsity basketball team and is an avid equestrian, volunteering her time to provide therapeutic riding sessions at a local ranch.
Christine Choi, a 17-year-old flutist from South Korea, began her musical journey at the age of 5 with the piano before discovering her passion for the flute at 8 under the mentorship of Hyun-sook Lee. At 14, Christine moved to California, where she continued to flourish as a musician and develop her artistry.
Christine currently studies the flute under Kaylee Yeon and has garnered numerous accolades in prestigious competitions, such as the Charleston International Music Competition, San Francisco International Young Artists Competition, Southwestern Youth Music Festival, Concordia Music Competition, and more. She has served as the principal flutist of the South Coast Youth Symphony Orchestra (SCYSO) for two years and was recently selected to perform a flute concerto as a soloist. She is also an active member of renowned ensembles such as the Pacific Symphony Youth Wind Ensemble (PSYWE), Junior Chamber Music (JCM), and Prodigy Flute Trio.
Christine attends Sonora High School and is a member of Sonora High School Band, where she plays a vital role leading the flute section as a section leader and was awarded the Most Outstanding Player Award for two consecutive years. Her musical excellence has also secured her positions in distinguished honor ensembles, including the California All-State Honor Band(CASMEC), the Southern California School Band and Orchestra Association (SCSBOA) All-Southern Honor Band, and the California State University Fullerton (CSUF) Titan High School Honor Band.
