Yang (Vicky) Sheng
Yang Sheng is a passionate piano educator and chamber music coach with over 23 years of teaching experience in the United States. She works with students of all ages to develop both their individual artistry and collaborative skills. As the founder of her own piano studio and co-founder of the Piano Trio Music School in the Los Angeles area, Ms. Sheng and her team prepare students for performances, certificate examinations, music festivals, and competitions.
Teaching and Chamber Music Background
Before relocating to the United States, Ms. Sheng served as an Assistant Professor of Piano and Chamber Music at the Shenyang Conservatory of Music in China, where she was praised as “the finest collaborative artist.” She performed extensively with vocal and instrumental faculty members and earned the top prize for Best Performance at the Gala Concert of the Nine Major Music Conservatories of China.
Her collaborations include appearances with internationally acclaimed musicians such as trumpet soloist Dr. Jay Coble, violinist Yevgen Pereplyotchyk, and flutist Ayako Maeda. Ms. Sheng views chamber music as a vital part of music education, emphasizing its role in teaching students to listen deeply, communicate effectively, and support one another. She frequently organizes workshops, recitals, and masterclasses with distinguished guest artists to inspire and challenge her students.
Student Achievements
Many of Ms. Sheng’s students have excelled, winning top prizes in competitions including the CAMPT Honors Competition, IPPA, IAPMA, Satori, GOCAA, the Pacific Star International Competition, the Royal International Piano Competition, and SYMF. Her students have been invited to perform in masterclasses with USC Professor John Perry as well as at the Colburn School and The Juilliard School. They have also appeared at prestigious venues such as Carnegie Hall in New York, Walt Disney Concert Hall in Los Angeles, and the Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts in Washington, D.C. In addition, she mentors students at international music festivals such as the IPPA Conero International Piano Festival and Music Fest Perugia in Italy.
Personal Training and Performance
Ms. Sheng began piano studies at the age of four under the guidance of her father, a renowned collaborative artist in China. She earned her B.M. and M.M. degrees in piano performance with distinction and began teaching at the Shenyang Conservatory. After moving to the United States, she continued her studies with Dr. Jackie Petitto and Dr. Sarkis Baltaian, earning an additional M.M. degree in piano performance. She has also participated in masterclasses with distinguished pianists including Mr.Jerome Lowenthal, Mr.Thomas Schumacher, and Mr.Alan Chow in both the U.S. and China.
Professional Service and Pedagogy
Ms. Sheng is committed to advancing music education through service and scholarship. She served annually as an evaluator for the Music Teachers’ Association of California (MTAC) and has been a judge for international competitions including IPPA, the Satori Piano Competition, the GOCAA International Competition, and the Pacific Star International Competition. She has also been invited as a pedagogy scholar at international festivals such as the Conero International Piano Festival in Italy, where she shares her expertise with educators and students worldwide.
